First it was a square box in the boardroom - then someone changed it for a rectangle one. Then overnight it got flattened somewhat. But even after that evolution - there was more. It was now a rectangularised, flattened image that could not possibly be high enough in resolution....... Where will it end?
High Definition video - whats the go there? What will it do for you within your company?
Firstly let me just say that my opinions don't automatically reflect those of the normal production comapny that will be rubbing their hands with glee at the mere thought of producing HD content. I will also point out that we at Media Odyssey run advanced digital manipulation equipment that could buy a rather large packet of popcorn.....more than a 3 dozen metropolitan street blocks full at a guesss ,but I don't believe in pushing a service forward before its appropriately timed for the customer to take on some mutual benefits.
I also disaprove of operators attempting to do trade on the HD wording with no Broadcast grade equipment - ie domestic and semi professional equipment that fudge the quality bandwidth for a sticker that says HD.
High Definition must be a appreciated in its native full broadcast state of 1080P full square pixel. Lower spec HDV cameras are a significant compromise displaying 30% less image pixels.
My opinion is that High definition will only be viable to corporations on mass once the pricing has stabilised at a price point that is comparable to the Broadcast standard resolution rates.
yes - it does have very pretty pictures - but at a cost. Blu-Ray disc is the only viable process of distribution of HD content. A Blu-Ray disc is at Aug 2008 worth $35 to buy as a blank disc. A far cry from DVD in the $2 range
So in my opinion what should you be doing, and when?
At this stage - in the interest of future proofing, shoot true HD wherever you can. Not the compromised HDV medium.
Post produce content in HD only when the end result will benefit from this service. At this point in time NO Australian broadcaster is transmitting Tv ads/Commercials in HD. thats right NONE of them.
If you are producing documentary, drama or digital feature content - then it is a must right now. This content has worldwide buyers in broadcast HD right now!
